Stay safe while you create a holiday feel in your yard.

This might be the time of year when many people around the country are taking a break from thinking about their lawns. Sprinkler systems have been put away for the year and thoughts of spring are still a few months away.

This does not mean there is not work to be done in your yard. This is the time to think about outdoor decorations for the holidays. After all, ’tis the season.

This is also the season to make sure you stay safe when you decorate. Make sure any light strings and extension cords you use are meant for outdoor use. Don’t assume the same lights you would use on a tree indoors are safe for outdoor decorations. Check the labels. You should only use lights that have fused plugs (this goes for indoor lights as well). Check all your lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires and loose connections. Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per extension cord.

Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house walls, or other firm outdoor supports. This will protect the lights from wind damage. Use only insulated staples to hold strings in place. Avoid using nails or tacks.

Use lights and electrical equipment that has been tested and verified by a reliable testing laboratory. Two such laboratories are UL and ETL. Look for one of their logos on any lighting or equipment you buy for outdoor decoration use.

Don’t dismiss these safety precautions. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 12, 500 people wind up in hospital emergency rooms each year for injuries related to holiday lights, decorations and Christmas Trees.

You should decide in advance when you plan to put your yard lights. This should save you time and also help make for a nicer yard display.
