Your lawn needs care in all seasons, even winter. Cold weather may bring snow but during the times the ground is bare, there are things you can be doing to help your grass and yard make it through winter.
- Avoid excessive lawn traffic. Your grass needs a break during the winter. It’s frailer. Just because the grass is brown and short does not mean it should be walked on with more frequency.
- Keep an eye on the weather. Most of us do this anyway during the winter. If your lawn is free of snow but has some frozen spots with ice, it might be a good idea to chip away and loosen some of that ice if a winter storm or severe cold is on the way.
- Check out your plants. If you have any outdoor perennial plants that are dormant, cut back the brown tops. Do not cut the tops if the tops are still green.
- Brush plants and branches after snowfall. A buildup of snow can be damaging. Heavy snow can be damaging. Brush the snow off in an upward direction.
- Keep your front walk clear so there is not a prolonged build-up of snow and ice.
